ABOUT THE ARTY CAKE
The Arty Cake is a small independent cake business based in Saffron Walden, run by Sally Roper, a baker and artist.
The Arty Cake specialises in round, butter cream, layered cakes using an abstract, modern and artist style. I have always had a love for all things that are hands-on and creative. After making my children’s Birthday cakes for a few years I decided to fuse together my baking and art skills to create The Arty Cake.
Each cake is individually designed and unique. The buttercream is my paint and the cake is my canvas. Cakes are tailored to each individual brief, making each cake personal and special for each client.
I have been very lucky to have had more than one career. I started out, as a Musical Theatre performer, performing in many musicals in the West End, UK and in other countries. My career lasted for 10 years, before I went on to have a family. Returning to theatre was not an option for me once the children arrived. The plan was for me to stay at home with the children, until they started school, then look at a new career path.
Before my BA Hons in Performance at Mountview Theatre School and a career in Musical Theatre I went to Ravensbourne Art College. Art has always been my other passion. When the children were in bed at night I would paint. Slowly Sally Roper Artist began. From there I started baking the children’s birthday cakes and fused my art and love of baking together which is where The Arty Cake was born.
Once these two small businesses were up and running I realised I missed singing and an opportunity came for me to sing with someone locally I knew. From there our band Sand was formed consisting of Mandy and I on vocals, Dave on guitar and Daf on drums.
The final piece of the jigsaw slotted into place when I was offered a job working at my local artisan sourdough bakery in Saffron Walden, called Mini Miss Bread, making their buns and cookies.
